You know how we love to add bits of indie style to our own summer wardrobes? Well, when chatting with the ladies from Of A Kind, we knew they’d be able to share how to incorporate unexpected fashion and décor elements into a wedding, too. They are certainly the experts when it comes to independent designers, and we couldn’t agree more that adding pieces from up and coming designers and artists sets you apart from the masses and allows you to show off something truly personalized and unique. Fitting for a one of a kind day, yes?
For their own weddings, Of A Kind founders Erica and Claire both incorporated unique fashion pieces from on-the-rise designers. Not hard to do when you have a website full of stunning options to choose from! Their awesome site and shop promotes new and emerging designers and their stories, so you can get your hands on an exclusive, limited piece before anyone else. Hello, most perfect little shop for unique bridesmaid gifts! More on that later, first let’s see what these two fashionable ladies wore for their own recent weddings.
Up first, the lovely Erica and the biggest item of interest… the dress! She explains how she found her (ready?) WHITE LEATHER number by Kaelen. (See the same design here in black.)
“I was really struggling to figure out what I wanted to wear— I liked the idea of a just-sixties vibe that felt right for the City Hall setting, but I just wasn’t drawn to the idea of a classic wedding gown. When Claire and I went to Kaelen’s fashion week presentation, I pointed at a dress she was showing in a bronze-brown leather and said, “I want something like that in white.” And Claire said, “So ask her!” It was perfect. And how many excuses do you get to wear a white leather dress, really?”
Her invites were designed by friend, designer, and illustrator Lisa Hedge.
She chose a Lulu Frost bracelet, a small homage to the first piece of big-girl jewelry she bought for herself (also from Lulu Frost). Isn’t it sweet that every time she puts that beauty on, she’ll be reminded of her wedding day?
She carried a blush Clare Vivier foldover clutch (definitely a 100 Layer Cake favorite in any color) and her rings were made by Blanca Monros Gomez. She and her hubs had them custom designed from rose gold, black diamonds, and sapphires (his birthstone!). And if you caught a glimpse of her stunning blue shoes in the photo at the top of the post, we’re betting you want to know who made them, yes? Alexandre Birman. You’re welcome!

Now for the beautiful Clare, who was married in her parents’ backyard with spiderman for a ring bearer. We like where this is going already.
Aside from her adorable super-nephew, let’s talk about her dress first. Sexy and simple, it sounds like she couldn’t have found a more perfect piece.
“I knew I wanted something really simple and minimal, but I was prepared to be proven wrong (as a lot of people told me I would be!) and find myself falling in love with something more traditional instead—strapless, lacy, big. But I felt so out-of-place in all of the traditional gowns I tried on. I’d never worn a giant gown in my life, so it felt like a strange idea to wear one for the first time on the one day where I really wanted to feel like myself. As soon as I tried this Juan Carlos Obando number on, I realized it was hitting all the notes I had in my head. It’s super modern, chic, and simple without being boring.”
Love this bit of advice she gives newly engaged friends: Go try on fancy dresses somewhere that is not a bridal salon! Barneys and other high end stores carry beautiful, expensive white dresses that are still less than a bridal gown. And you can wear them again!
Her invites were made from paintings of her parents’ house, done by her talented grandmother who passed away in between the time they were engaged and the wedding. What a sweet way to imbue Claire’s marriage with the presence of such an important person in her life. They are so spectacular!
Claire’s mom made her veil using a tutorial on YouTube (go DIY!).
Her rings were designed by Lauren Wolf, with the help of her husband, and of course Erica! That’s grey diamond solitaire with an organic pave diamond band. Super lovely and different.
Of A Kind designer Caroline Z. Hurley made the beautiful table runners, which Claire had cut down into napkins for everyday use after the wedding was over.
If the back of that dress doesn’t make you swoon! Such a beauty, Claire.
We say thumbs up to every single part of these pretty weddings.
