New Zealand mountaintop elopement

We hear a lot of sweet love stories around here, but Tori + Jason’s will sure stick out in our minds. It’s not very often that a couple starts off planning a big, traditional southern wedding and ends up exchanging vows on a mountaintop in New Zealand, you know? Thanks to bride Tori for telling their story alongside these epic photos from Forged in the North

Tori tells it, Both being from the deep South, we just assumed we would have a big, traditional wedding. As we started planning our wedding everything fell apart—even our venue caught fire! That’s when we decided to make our big day the most adventurous, unforgettable day we could imagine. Jason, being a pilot and an adventure nut, loved the thought of New Zealand. It took some convincing on my part, but turned out to be the best decision we ever made.

When our actual wedding day approached in Queentown, it was rained out! So a day after it was planned, we laced our boots up, I put on some lipstick and a white dress, and we began our wedding day. Our first location, Skipper’s Canyon, was where Jason and I did our first look. In the midst of seeing each other for the first time, we stood among native mountain sheep and vans of tourist onlookers. I have always found Jason to be a hunk, but that day, in Skipper’s Canyon, in his J. Crew suit—I knew I found the right one!

Our second location, the Remarkables, required a little help getting there. So we loaded up into a helicopter and found the highest point on the mountain range. As we captured the day in photos, I realized working with Ryan and Heidi was like being with old friends. To say they are talented photographers is an understatement—they are storytellers. They truly breathe each shot they take. Their way of capturing our day made it even more unique and special.

In the end, we said our I Dos over a brilliantly painted New Zealand sunset and a bottle of champagne. In those few breathtaking moments, I realized that stepping out of our comfort zone for the biggest day of our lives made for something even grander than we had ever imagined.

May pole

The fun thing about this picnic inspiration shoot is that it could totally be used to spark ideas for tons of occasions. Bridal shower? Check. Spring birthday party? Yep. A just-because outing with your gals? That too. These ladies created it to celebrate May Day along with their DIY may pole (tutorial below), but a picnic in a field on a sunny afternoon? Wouldn’t pass up an invite any day!

Thanks to Tulle & Grace for sharing the cheerful vibes with these snaps below.

Whitney of Tulle & Grace says, With a sun filled sky and three cars full of flowers, props, and smiles, we set out to find the perfect field in Athens. We came across the most lush grass and knew it was the perfect spot for our picnic. Candice of Chancey Charm began working her styling magic on the picnic table while the lovely ladies in white and I set out to quite literally frolic through the field to create this fun and summery shoot.

Now, onto a cute DIY by Forage & Fleur for the may pole shown above:

Supplies:

Snips, wire, greens of choice, measuring tape, birch pole, rebar, clear zip ties, hammer, and nails

Instructions:

1. Begin to wire all of the base greens together by starting at the beginning of one piece and the end of another piece, trimming as necessary. We chose ruscus for the organic shape and its ability to withstand being out of water for an extended time. Since the garland will be held for the may pole, make sure to tightly wire it together and test as you go by gently tugging in opposite directions to assure textural integrate.
2. As you go, add in any flower/greenery accents. We chose the long-leaf wax flower and jasmine.
3. Continue to wire into your main garland as light or heavy as you like.
4. Continue until you have ten feet of garland.
5. Repeat until you have the number of garlands you need. We did five.
6. Hammer five nails (or total number of garlands) into the birch pole and begin to wire the ends of each garland to the nails.
7. Take any remaining greens and lightly wire them up the pole to cover up the rebar and zip ties.

Air plant and wildflower bouquet

Sometimes the best thing you can do for an event design is combine two distinctly different elements, like the desert greens + softer petals in this bouquet, or romantic hand lettering amongst geometric shapes and modern tableware. Kelsey Rae Designs took the succulent garden, tiled wall, and velvet chairs of their Del Mar venue to bring a modern twist to a seaside retreat—basically, the best of both worlds, as captured by Plum & Oak Photo.

Nothing better than a big, beautiful xerographica air plant at the center of your bouquet.

Kelsey explains, The moment Elyse Barton of Plum & Oak Photo and I stepped onto L’Auberge Del Mar’s property, we knew we had found a gem. With its exposed brick exterior and ivy covered walls, we were surprised to walk in and find a little piece of retro heaven right in Del Mar, California.

Kelsey says, Inspired by clean and chic geometrics such as our love for terrariums and air plants, Elyse went to work building the giant geo structure that soon became the focal point of our shoot. We wanted brides who share our love for geometric shapes to be able to incorporate it beautifully into their day. The exaggerated size of our geometric structure can only be matched by the heightened emotions of a wedding day. It is breathtaking, modern, sophisticated, and most importantly different.
