Indie Portland meets Maui wedding

Here’s a wedding theme you didn’t know you loved: Portland-meets-Maui. It’s like tropical, indie goodness all wrapped into one. Myles + Chris are both creatives in the wedding industry (she’s a photog, he’s a musician, and they’re in a band together) who brought their indie style to Hawaii to tie the knot. They enlisted Maui photog Wendy Laurel to work her film magic and enjoyed a whole week of relaxation at Royal Lahaina Resort with 10 of their closest fam + friends. They even put together a post-wedding ocean portrait sesh in the bride’s grandparents’ wedding clothes…

Their theme was ‘pastel sunset’ which was instantly a fave muse over here.

Myles says, We’ve seen all kinds of weddings but the most important part of the wedding for us was spending quality time with our family. Everyone stayed there for about a week so it was more like a vacation than a wedding… As I was researching Maui, the town of Lahaina kept popping up as a fun place to go so we ended up booking a resort on the West side of the island close to the town. Royal Lahaina Resort was perfect because it was quiet and not crowded at all. It also had a wedding package that included pretty much everything, and the ceremony site overlooked the ocean. It just seemed to be exactly what we needed. Plus, the macadamia nut pancakes and alcoholic beverages served inside a pineapple helped convince us.

Since Chris and I had never been to Hawaii, we had to randomly pick a hotel and ceremony site just by looking at photos on the internet. The Royal Lahaina was within our budget and was right on the beach. The hotel was beautiful and while there were a few hiccups with the room reservations, everything ended up working out and I couldn’t have been happier with it. Honestly, I’d recommend getting married in Hawaii to anyone. The weather is perfect every day, it’s relaxing and everything about the trip was memorable.

Booking a wedding package through the resort helped them keep their budget below $10K, and so did getting creative with decor (Myles picked up those rose petals lining the aisles at Safeway for the ceremony!).

After the wedding, they had a portrait shoot where Myles wore her grandmother’s wedding dress and Chris wore her great grandfather’s tails and top hat.

Final bits of advice for those of you planning a destination wedding… I’d definitely recommend booking your hotel as soon as you can because they book up fast! Also, Chris and I got married on the second day we were there, so after the wedding we couldn’t believe we still had 5 days left on Maui to relax. I’d recommend getting married at the beginning of your trip so you can spend the rest of the time enjoying it and not stressing out.

Congratulations, Myles + Chris!
