southwestern watercolor invitation suite

We love that Casa de Perrin chose to reveal their rad new Navajo dinnerware collection by grabbing a team of some of the most insanely creative masters in their respective fields, aka Jose VillaJesi Haack, Honey and PoppiesPitbulls and Posies, and Sweet and Saucy Shop, head to the desert and create this dreamy shoot. We’re thinking their new collection, best described as Southwestern design meets Art Deco Americana would make for some gorgeous wedding decor too. You’ll see. There’s everything to love about this shoot, so jump in and soak it all up!

  20. Love the colors, geometric motifs, and especially the cactus centerpieces! I spent a few years living in the Southwest, and those details really capture what I miss about it.

However, I have to say that the feather headdresses made me uncomfortable. I don’t know if any Native vendors contributed to this shoot, but having people wear feather headdresses in a wedding-fashion context is pretty disrespectful, kind of like taping a model’s eyes to look “Asian” in a Japan-inspired shoot would be. You can see this post on Native Appropriations for a larger discussion: http://nativeappropriations.blogspot.com/2010/04/but-why-cant-i-wear-hipster-headdress.html

  21. As a native american I was very off-put by the stylized headdresses, really inappropriate.

  22. Love this shoot! Beautiful use of colors!

  23. This was one of my most favorite shoots to be involved with!!!
Our intention was not to offend or disrespect ANY culture. We were using a beautiful piece of culture as an inspiration for artistic expression. We would NEVER mean to disrespect the Native American culture! I might not be aware of the symbolism behind a head dress, but we were just so inspired by the culture and wanted to use Karina’s beautiful headdress art in our designs. Thanks girls at 100 Layer Cake! We love you!

  34. This is so beautiful and inspiring. Great post!

  35. I think that the headdress and design elements shouldn’t offend. The inclusion of style elements of cultures is generally not pejorative in any way and shouldn’t be discouraged. Also, the flower bouquet is great! Very unique.

  36. Where did you/they find the building blocks? I would love to find blank ones to paint for my own event. Thanks!
