colorful birthday invite

Turning the big dirtay 30 is the best time to throw yourself a radtastic party. Edyta Szyszlo, also one of our fave photographers, well she’s been known to cut a rug at house parties and just about everywhere she goes, so it was a must to have a dance party for her birthday. And well, homegirl knows how to throw a party! Just take a look at that invitation, designed by Hello!Lucky. Hang-on-the-wall-like-a-piece-of-art-worthy! With an invite like that, for a girl who loves mixing opposites together (chic & glam, rustic & quirky), and would put a white sheepskin rug out in the middle of the desert, aren’t you curious to see how she rang in the start of her third decade?

So where did it all go down? The Workshop SF. It was the perfect mix of quirky, DIY details, creative, unique and comfy size (not to mention just a few blocks away from where I live) so it was the perfect spot to host the event. And they teach some amazing DIY classes for anyone to take!

No cake or cupcakes here! I wanted a variety of cakepop flavors to make it easy to appease everyone’s tastes and provide easy munching on the dance floor!

muted bouquet of lamb's ear, tulips, and-roses

This is one of the many reasons we love Caroline Tran: she found a way to marry her passion for teaching and photography and created Propel, a photography mentoring workshop. It’s the prettiest retreat anyone can attend to learn how to build a sustainable business and establish their style while shooting some of the most beautifully styled shoots Caroline & friends set up for hands-on practice. This elegant tea party was styled for all workshop attendees to photograph, and it’s gorgeous.

Positano, Italy wedding invitations

Sometimes wedding plans change – from having a shindig in the states to oh say… making sure your friends can plan a trip abroad to witness you saying ‘I Do’ in Positano, Italy. We wouldn’t expect anything less from these two though. Remember their vintage railroad engagement photos? They are self-declared traveling fools and we love them for that. If not for them, and the gorgeous photography of W. Scott Chester, we’d have no reason to take mini daydream breaks throughout the day.

Italian wedding ceremony

Oh to be a fly in the room during their ceremony that was presided over by the mayor of Positano, in Italian. Following the ceremony, the mayor handed them their first gift – a hand-painted tile memento of their marriage.

Seeing their wedding is amazing and all, but we all know what you’re thinking… how do you even begin to plan a wedding in a foreign country? Here’s Shelli to tell it like it is:

The planning part was tricky but fun. In March, three months before the wedding, I flew to Italy with my mother after we serendipitously found a last minute ridiculous deal on a travel package to Naples and the Amalfi Coast- it actually saved us a good bit on our budget just to go in advance and find a florist, caterer, cake baker, etc without using a wedding planner. That was a big DIY leap of faith, but I now know why it is such an inexpensive season to go- it poured rain and navigating along the cliffs of the Amalfi coastline in that kind of monsoon is not for the faint of heart. Fortunately my mother had driven Italy before and she is no wimp. It was also a good pre-wedding girls trip with a super cool lady. We also discovered the best pizza in Naples (i.e., the best in the world) – totally worth the less charming aspects of the city.

The legalities of it were very difficult, and Christopher really went to the ends of the Earth to make that happen. Everything went back and forth from Italy to the USA for documentation, and a couple days before our wedding we had to go together to Naples to the US consulate- we stayed over the night before in Naples with a couple friends and enjoyed a night in that crazy city (and more of the best Margherita pizza in the world, of course.) Driving around Naples takes a fair bit of nerve, to say the least.

Libations were sweet and simple and little bit of a local fave: limoncello and proseco (with punched-out letterpress tags made by Shelli). They purchased a few dozen bottles of San Pellegrino Aranciata in the local shops in Positano and used them as drinking vessels.

The food was really the main element for the reception. The wine, the cakes – it was all Italian. The villa, overlooking the not so shabby Amalfi Coast, had a lot of little Italian details and the gingham was a nod to picnics as well as the traditional Italian trattoria style.

Breathtaking isn’t it? Big congrats to Shelli + Chris on their dreamy wedding (also featured in Martha Stewart Weddings), and the new addition to their little family!

orchard wedding tablescape

It took a couple of days, but it’s finally starting to feel like fall around here. There’s a slight breeze, and posts like the two we’re sharing on the blog today totally help. This one, styled and photographed by Angela Shcheglov of Eminence Photography, might possibly have you wanting to bake a pie and eat it in the middle of an orchard on a quaint little table for two.

all white rose bouquet

Here’s a little secret some of you might already know about: aside from the wedding blogs, the ever so addicting Pinterest, and magazine tears, you should keep an eye on how some of your favorite stores (ie Anthropologie) merchandise their products and how creative they get with their displays. We swear, every time we walk into one of their stores we’re inspired by every tiny corner. That’s how Danielle was inspired to include the combination of rustic elements – the wood, wildflowers, burlap on the tables, as well as delicate & feminine touches, like the milk glass vases, candles, and mismatched vintage plates.

I knew I wanted to tie in as much of our families as possible, as they were such a huge part in getting us to our big day! To do this we framed pictures of each of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days, used my grandmother’s art easel to hold our thumbprint tree, and a ceramic basket my great-aunt created to hold our cards. It helped to make the day that more special.
