philly farm wedding

We have yet to meet a bride like Jackie. Believe it or not (we didn’t at first), the dress she wore for her ceremony was actually a dress she had stashed away in her “dress-up” box from childhood. Wild, right? And pretty stinkin’ adorable. If bits of Jackie + Matt’s wedding feel a little Wes Anderson inspired, that’s because it kind of is. Just take a look at their save the date. They’re a quirky bunch that made sure their 74 guests were taken care of in a casual & fun environment on a budget of $10k!

Maison Martin Margiela glitter boots

Since Jackie didn’t spend a penny on her ceremony dress…  we’re giving her major kudos for her brilliant idea to splurge on her dream Maison Martin Margiela sequin-splashed leather booties!

the first dance

Matt & I both have very eclectic taste in music so it was important to draw upon that in creating our playlists, especially since we used our computer as our DJ… We played everything from Otis Redding to General Public to France Gall. Matt walked down the aisle to Bob Dylan “You Belong to Me,” I walked down to Nico “These Days,” and the recessional was The Bobby Fuller Four “Let Her Dance” (all played by the amazing Christopher Bohn on the acoustic guitar).

Got any more tips Jackie? Believe in your vision, even if others can’t necessarily see the end result immediately. Once everything comes together it’s certainly worth all the blood, sweat, & DIY tears, and if doesn’t – let go…in the end all that matters is that you’re marrying your best friend. Make it your own! Everyone has an opinion when it comes to how things should look & be, and although some input is nice we were glad we executed everything on our terms. Also, use Tin Sparrow! Matt & Anna were awesome not only as photographers, but they provided such a calming effect throughout the entire process…and their work speaks for itself!

custom made feather fans

The 1920s speakeasy culture is always one of our faves to see recreated. Feathers, rhinestones, gold accents, rich colors, drinks flowing… it’s glamorous. What’s not to love about having your closest friends and family dress in the free spirit fashion of flappers with custom made feather fans to keep cool. Christina is not only a dear friend, she’s a modern day flapper with killer style! And one of our favorite bits about her wedding – she found her photographer & videographer by bidding for them in our vendor section!

Great tip from Christina: Ask your bridesmaids to remind you throughout the planning process and wedding day that everything is perfect even if it doesn’t look exactly how you imagined it would be. The things that go differently than planned often make the most memorable stories.

first dance

Our good friend Holly Mirkheshti flew in from Atlanta to sing jazz standards during the reception. Our first dance was “Cheek to Cheek” by Fred Astaire, choreographed by our dear friend Daniel Ponickly inspired by the 1920′s dance style “The Peabody”.

colorful brick wall engagement shoot

Just what we all need before heading off for the weekend – a mega burst of color! Melbourne based photographer, Kirralee Weddings sent us this adorable shoot that instantly put us in a good mood, so we thought we’d do you the favor and share it with you. In two parts, the first was fun, quirky, and obvs vibrant and shot at the Telstra Exchange Building. The second shoot, a little more softer. You’ll see.

From Kirralee: Flirtatious glances and romantic gestures brought Queensland couple Aysha and Stu together. They met at university, catching each other’s eyes across the classroom. Fate determined that they were later introduced through a mutual friend. Romance blossomed right from the beginning with cosy dinners, and Stu bringing Aysha wild hand-picked flowers, writing love notes and poems. Stu proposed to Aysha while they were still living in Queensland, before moving to Melbourne last year. He wined and dined Aysha at one of their favourite restaurants in Kings Beach, then asked the question next to the beach, underneath a tree ablaze with fairy lights.

outdoor las vegas wedding

We should probably state that this was a wedding in Las Vegas, and not a “Vegas” wedding. You’re not going to see the strip, the lights, lingerie, or fancy resorts. You will see lavender bouquets, lace, succulents, DIY touches, and a happy Carey + Russ hanging out with friends and family in the backyard of a cozy Vegas home. Being from Alaska, this was their destination wedding and they were determined to do it on a $10k budget. Surprisingly, she found it easy to stay within it! Here’s how…

fringe accent wedding dress

Carey’s dress was actually meant to be a bridesmaid dress — which she would have never thought of buying, but as soon as she walked into Bella Bridesmaid in Las Vegas, she saw it hanging there calling her name. The actually bridal gowns from designers like Jim Hjelm and Alvina Valenta were expensive, but to the side of them were very affordable and gorgeous “bridesmaid” dresses that you could also purchase in white or ivory… so Carey walked out with that chic Alvina Alventa number for a fraction of the cost she would have paid for a bridal gown. Good to keep in mind!

I was aiming for something a bit rustic and a bit vintage–with a cozy backyard feeling to it. I wanted to stay as ‘green’ as I could and have a unique handmade vibe to the decor. We looked at a lot of venues in Vegas but didn’t like any of the ballrooms, they were just too impersonal, and none of the gardens had the ‘homey’ feel I wanted. That’s when we got the idea to rent a house with a large outdoor space using VRBO –that way we could host some gatherings prior to the wedding and have a space people could just come hang out.

simple succulent, stacked books and colored vase centerpieces

For just about every DIY project I ran down the street to Michael’s for paint, stencils, brushes, stamps, paper, etc. I took advantage of every 40% to 50% coupon that popped up and went every day to buy something new.

My favorite DIY project was the cupcake stand my dad made. It was made from wood taken out from a pile behind our house. It was really special to have a piece of Alaska there at the wedding.

the first dance

We had trouble finding a ‘first dance’ song because we wanted one that wasn’t too sappy, not country, and not played at every other wedding. One morning on my way to work Bill Withers’ Lovely Day came on the radio and I realized that was the song I wanted as our first dance. I managed to find a cover of that song by Adam Levine (Maroon 5) that was a little slower and asked the DJ to mix it into the original Bill Wither’s version so we could transition our slow song into something more upbeat.

Final tip from Carey: Although doing a DIY wedding was stressful–and there were moments where I would break out crying because I couldn’t get the burlap to do what I wanted it to, it was all worth it. Don’t get discouraged if you explain your projects or ‘vision’ to others and they cringe–it will come together!! What is most special for me, when I look at my pictures of the reception, is that I see all the things that people helped with and it just reminds me how many people wanted the day to be special for us.

And can you believe she did all the planning for the wedding from Alaska? Not too shabby, right?

Many congrats Carey + Russ!

the Farmhouse Weddings, Indiana

Ok, this kind of looks like the house from Father of the Bride, right? Well, it’s not. But it’s just as charming –  just like Shannon + David’s wedding. Their day’s motto was ”Live. Love. Dance”, and ironically enough, their first dance actually was their first dance together, ever! Too cute. Something about this wedding makes us feel all cozy inside. Maybe it’s was the outdoor games (bocce ball is always a hit), or the handmade cornhole set with their silhouettes. The details were thoughtful and we absolutely adore it all!

Each guests was greeted with a bottle of homemade maple syrup when they took their seats. Dave worked diligently on making these favors happen and tapped about 30 trees on his 20 acres of land, slaving over large fires of boiling syrup.

My advice for other brides is advice past brides gave to me, which I found to be extremely difficult to follow. “Don’t stress out!” It’s nearly impossible to not stress out, but looking back I was so nervous, anxious, and stressed on my wedding day. None of the stress was about marrying Dave, it was just the little things, that really were not important. It had taken so long for this day to come and  I was stressing out about the little things. My other advice is don’t be mad at yourself if you do stress out, it happens, but enjoy as much of  the day as possible!
