Summer was fantastic, but aren’t you so ready for Fall now? Since today is the first official day of Fall, and it’s Friday, we thought it would be nice to jazz things up with a glowing inspiration shoot (literally). Juli Vaughn, Event Designer behind the pretty madness you’re about to see, rocked this shoot like no other. Oh, and the below print reading, “Keep calm and sparkle on” ? Juli made it herself! This lady is full of ideas that we wish we could buy and put on our walls!

Love the “XO” lighting as much as we do, and dying to know how Juli made it? Take notes:

First, I twisted all of the light bulbs (purchased at World Market) out of their sockets and set them aside. Then, using an x-acto knife, I cut a poster size black foam board in half and penciled out the X and O on the back. I cut 10 small (1/2 inch) squares along the penciled line of the letters, popped in the light sockets, and screwed in the light bulbs on the front. Last, I poked holes in the top of the foam board, threaded some ribbon through, and hung them inside the frames. Voila!

Juli, on the inspiration behind the concept:

I wanted to focus attention on the dreaminess of stars rather than the cliché nautical way they are normally portrayed. I started with the colors of a sky strewn with stars: Indigo, Black, and shades of Gold. Then I looked for flowers and DIY elements that were reminiscent of a star shape or had a little sparkle. I lucked out the day of the shoot because I found yellow peonies – they’re super hard to find but so gloriously fluffy and look like a burst of flame! I was thrilled when MyLife Photography and Elisha Sewell agreed to collaborate because they’re both so amazingly talented.

Thanks for sharing your amazing talents, ladies! Keep calm and sparkle on!

  2. Love this! The XO lights are just perfect!

  3. Love this! I started out with yellow as my color and then got a little crazy buying gold sparkle stuff so it’s nice to see how well it pulls together here. Maybe my reception won’t look too crazy mish mas after all. :)

  4. What is the name of the blue thistle-like flowers in your bouquets and all around? I love them!

  5. I love the oversized elements (emphasized in the second picture) it really plays up the femininity and playfulness. I also love the color scheme and the navy blue nails(!). Great shoot. You definitely succeeded in avoiding cliche stars.

  6. Thanks 100 Layer ladies for such a “glowing” review! Love, love, love the site – keep up the gorgeous work!

Tamara – this type of thistle is called a Globe Thistle.

  7. Ladies – I got married this past May at Summerour Studio in Atlanta, and Juli was my event/floral designer. There aren’t enough words to describe how fabulous Juli is. She took a huge empty room and turned it into a beautifully colorful, warm, and festive space. She has done a few weddings at Summerour now and each one looks dramatically different than the last. If you live in the Atlanta area, definitely give Juli a call – she will turn half-formed ideas in your brain into more than what you thought was possible!!!

  9. Really love the Mr. & Mrs. doily idea, any chance you tell us how to make them, please?

  10. Layla – Just happened to glance at this feature today and saw your comment! You can purchase all the pieces for the MR & MRS at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. You need gold doilies (from the cake/cupcake aisle), wooden stars (from the wood/paper mache aisle), and gold sticky letters. Oh! And I also cut out leaf shapes from gold scrapbook paper. Hot glue them all together and attach with gold wire OR you can just contact me and I’ll make them for you! :)
