When you think of a nautical-inspired wedding, lots of preppy details and a big venue with a mega guest list probably come to mind. But as Janet of Sandcastle Celebrations and photog Michelle Roller prove, the more indie couple can also create an intimate, authentic coastal experience—starting with a seaside locale like the Avila Beach Golf Resort along a quiet stretch of the California coast. Here’s how it’s done…

Step one, a modern pantsuit (and dress), both from Rebecca Schoneveld. Who says elopements can’t have outfit changes, too?!

The team chose a lantern to use as one of the bridal bouquet designs, providing a framework for Eden Floral‘s unique designs (and a connection to the seafarer’s way of life) that contrasted the cascading flowers and hand-dyed ribbons of her more traditional bouquet.

The custom ceremony backdrop was created by Macrame by Kari. It set the tone with its maritime fun and different spin on the traditional macramé. Large, thick knots and hanging rope ends mirrored those found on a sailor’s boat. Eden Floral created the floral design that cascaded down the sides of the macramé in all shades of pink.

The cake, designed by Paper Cake Events, definitely captured the nautical vibe of the shoot. The mix of large over-sized rope accents with different sized stripes translated into a modern twist for a wedding cake. This shoot captured all the romance of the sea from the faint call of the seagulls to the misty fog rolling in among the sailboats.

Yep, time to add garden roses + orchids to your bridal bouquet must-list.
