Jessica Hische and Russ Maschmeyer Brooklyn wedding reception

January 28, 2013
Jessica Hische and Russ wedding sign Jessica and Russ set quite the tone with their ingenious timeline wedding invitation, their even more visionary wedding website, and precursor picnic wedding celebration in San Francisco. Then it was off to Brooklyn, their now home away from home, to party with 300 of their friends & fam. Props to Sugar & Fluff for designing & planning a second bash for such dream clients. They’re seasoned pros at this: turning an already beautiful venue like The Green Building into a memorable experience, taking J + R’s style and palette and creating a seamless love story with it. We’re thankful photographer Kristen Marie was behind the lens capturing every pretty detail, because there were plenty. Endless cat stickers and Tattly tattoos included.

As far as invitations go, their collaborative timeline love story, created by a multitude of their designer friends and artists, pretty much blows us away. We shared a few snippets from their wedding website above, but you can see it in entire digital form, here.

Jessica is one lucky (and smart) gal. Because of their bi-coastal weddings, she got to party in her wedding dress two times.

Centerpieces were held with hammer two tone metal bowls to enhance the gastropub charm and break up the light florals against the linens.

Linens were hand-embroidered with the signature stars from J + R’s invitations, along with custom gold rub-downs on whiskey-bottles for the centerpieces and votives.

To add a more festive and personal touch to the industrial romance of the Green Building, Sugar & Fluff suspended mylar-fringe chandeliers to bounce off the light and add movement.

We wanted everything to be low pressure and mostly just be all about gathering all the people we love together rather than a formal event. The reception especially was just a big party—the priority was having enough booze, making an epic dancey playlist, (we just used an iPhone as a DJ), and having good photography. The venue was so pretty and our friends love to dress up so we felt like no matter what it would turn out great.

Their first dance song was ‘This Will Be Our Year’ by The Zombies.

A favorite memory of Jessica’s:

At the end of the night, there were only a dozen or so people left and we ended up in a big circle together singing songs and dancing. It was pretty magical. Also seeing my mother-in-law with temporary tattoos all over her arms was pretty great.

There was most definitely a photobooth. To break up the drama in the space and add pattern and a blast of color, Sugar & Fluff designed a backdrop inspired by the abstract design of Ishihara plates and Jessica + Russ’s monogram.

Now for the teary good stuff, their moving picture!

A few words from Jessica:

The planning took well over a year on and off, and my biggest hurdle was actually wanting to plan! I was kind of a believer that if you put the right people in the same room together, throw in a bunch of booze, everything will turn out great. I was stressed out about having everyone from my divorced family in the same room together and really just wanted to run away and elope. We ended up having the best of both worlds by separating the ceremony from the reception and with Sugar & Fluff’s help I started to get excited about planning out details. I felt kind of guilty that I wasn’t obsessed with wedding planning like a lot of brides are, but I chalk that up to the fact that I have so much else going on at any given point that geeking out about wedding details seemed low priority. Thank God Aasim and crew were around to actually keep things moving and organize so many of the details that made everything look so spectacular.

Major congrats to Jessica + Russ! They’ll continue to inspire us in everything web and design and are so stoked we were able to share in their special day(s).
