Industrial Southern California wedding: Beth + Ben

Categories   Real Weddings

Proof that you don’t have to wear a white dress to feel beautiful and special on your wedding day. Instead buy an amazing Lanvin, throw in a pair of YSL heels and you’ll look completely stunning and have a killer outfit you can wear forever. SMARTY PANTS, Beth. You look ravishing. Oh wait, AND she had the wrap custom made using fabric she bought in Paris, while she was there hunting for her YSLs. We die.

Ben (a British astronomer, fancy!) and Beth (a psychologist) knew they didn’t want a traditional wedding. Instead they wanted a stylish party to celebrate with their friends. They definitely pulled it off perfectly.

Their ceremony and reception were held at the historic Huron Substation in LA, a private residence that once housed equipment to convert high voltage energy from Edison to power for the LA Railway Yellow Cars in the early part of the 20th century. Neat, right? Now it’s available for filming, special events and a very select number of weddings per year. Apparently if you choose to be married in a couture cocktail dress, they give you priority.

As an homage to Ben’s Britishness, Alex Catering created an entirely British menu with things like Scotch eggs, Welsh Rarebit, and Shepherd’s pie.

The wedding cakes were a mixture of family recipes and plus a traditional English Bride’s cake that Beth made herself. The cake calls for fruit steeped in rum and Beth started steeping the fruit not too long after Ben proposed. How cute is that?

Congratulations, Ben and Beth! You guys look maaaarhvelous.

That custom shawl is ravishing, indeed! Such a soft, elegant color. I'll keep with your Rachel Zoe vocab here - this wedding is bananas. In a fab, fun and glam way, of course! ;) Thanks for sharing!

I love such a unique & personal spin on tradition. The flags, the British menu...the couple embraced their personalities and added such fun and whimsy! I'm sure this was a party that left guests talking long after the day was over.

Hi 100Layer! What a great post! It's refreshing to see a different take on the typical wedding - the dress, and the bride wearing it, look amazing indeed! It makes me wonder about how the cultural climate changes, and allows for people to break the former mold, for a different sense of self-expression. It certainly is a welcomed idea! Especially when it comes to an event as traditional as the wedding. Thanks for posting this!

Thank you for posting photos of this couple's wedding day. Among other things I create custom invitations and it is people like Ben and Beth, the folks who have their own vision that make my job a joy. I would have loved to have collaborated with this couple!

This is so original. I love her black cocktail dress. It's difficult to do a wedding these days that doesn't feel already done--this doesn't. Iit reminds me of my friend Elizabeth's wedding--not in the style--hers was very vintage and romantic--but in the venue. She was married in a raw-space carriage house behind a beautiful old St. Louis mansion. Sharon
