The Shrines is a project helmed by an elite group of LA yacht rock and funk revivalists, whose members have toured with everyone from Patrice Rushen to Frankie Valli. Shaped in collaboration with Jesse Kivel and Michael David of Dart DJ, their setlist moves seamlessly from the timeless grooves of Hall and Oates to the contemporary retro feel of Chromeo and Phoenix. The sonic goal of The Shrines is to keep their sound cohesive while still tackling a broad array of music. All too often, party bands claim to play every genre of music. In so doing, they sound nondescript, hoping to appeal to everyone and losing their own voice. The Shrines are not for everyone. But if you enjoy hearing a band who will blithely—and skillfully—transition from Talking Heads into LCD Soundsystem, or The Weeknd into Michael Jackson, well then, they may just be for you.
