Amanda’s Mexico vacation: Rivera Maya

Aaand the last stop on our Riviera Mayan adventure.. an excursion to Cenote Ik-kil and Chichen Itza. (Here are Part 1 and Part 2 of our trip in case you missed them.) Cenotes are natural pits resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. They were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. Oy! This one was pure magic. It was a bit of a drive, 2 hours inland, passing small Mexican towns and tons of dense foliage. But once we got there, we were in awe!

The water is blue and refreshing, with fish swimming by and hundreds of roots hanging from the top of the opening. Never before had we seen anything like this! Totally magnificent and very, very magical.

When you’re near one of the new seven wonders of the world, you must pay a visit. The pyramid and ruins at Chichen Itza were pretty rad, and the perfect amount of adventure to top off our day.

We made our way a little up the coast aways, north of Playa del Carmen to the virtuous Viceroy Riviera Maya, our last Mr & Mrs Smith hotel to visit on this epic journey. The concierge greeted us with freshly cut soap and Mezcal. Muy bien. And showed us to our room with a private dipping pool and indoor/outdoor shower. WHAT. Let’s just say that nothing compares to taking a hot shower outside surrounded by lush foliage and gentle wind.

Outdoor beds in case you can’t make it back to the room for a snooze. Check.

And a delicious little hammock, for plenty of naps. You read my mind, Viceroy.

I did my fair share of Instagramming whilst in Mexico, so thought I’d share a few of my faves at this last stop.

Wow, what an amazing stay. Thank you Viceroy Riviera Maya! You can see our other stops in Riviera Maya here and here.

And don’t forget honeymooners, Mr & Mrs Smith’s Just Married Pass is the key to making your trip here ever so comfortable!
