Rustic bohemian wedding in Aspen: Christiana + Jonathon

Happy May, Cakies! When scrolling through Feather Love Photography‘s images of C +J’s big day, you’ll feel instantly transported to a faraway place. That’s because they wanted to recreate the feel of an elopement in the Scottish Highlands, while still being able to celebrate with guests here in the US. To make it happen, they headed to Aspen for a rustic bohemian wedding high in the Colorado mountains.

Their vision for the day? Medieval romanticism with a late 1960s filter. Nailed it!

Christiana says, I love the soft, imperfect look of film photography, as well as the mystery of the end result. I’m really camera shy and I needed someone who could make me feel comfortable, and I was a huge fan of Noa’s style and how she stays outside of a lot of wedding photography trends. Our wedding day turned out to be extremely challenging from a photography perspective, with glaring sun rays during the ceremony and a reception lit only with lanterns, candles, a bonfire, and the moon. Noa was exceptionally relaxed and brilliant.

C + J headed up to the mountains (after lots of searching for a spot that had a path and habitat that could support 50 guests) for the ceremony and celebrated with 80 friends and fam during the reception at a family member’s house that eve.

We put our wedding together in just a few months because we were worried that if we took too long, we would overcomplicate things. My dad and my husband made the bar and banquet tables the day before. My brother-in-law made a fire put on which we roasted legs of mutton from my mother’s farm. My bridal party made our bouquets the morning of the ceremony. We stripped the reception down to the essentials. There were no place settings or DJs, no first dances or bouquet tosses. Just a bonfire, some nooks, amazing Moroccan-inspired food, and people we love.

Isn’t this whole locale the perfect complement to a secluded mountain ceremony?

As you can imagine, the trees, mountains, and river created such a dreamy natural backdrop that they didn’t need much decor. But they brought in a few lounge areas and bohemian accents for guests to get cozy around.

It had been raining all week. When you’re really high in the mountains, you never know what you are going to get until the very last minute. We drove up the winding roads and saw large areas of dark clouds on the horizon, but when we got out of the car it was a rare, perfect day with blue skies and fat white clouds that cast shadows across the mountains and lakes. I wasn’t sure where the exact vows location was located, so my family and I just followed the echoing bagpipes until we crested a hill and saw our loved ones and my husband standing in the distance.

What a magical experience! Congrats, Jonathan and Christiana!
