We’re over the moon excited to share Neel + Lucia’s effortlessly beautiful wedding! When Lacey Wagner contacted us with the deets on this one, we may or may not have done a little celebratory dance. The DIY elements were flawlessly executed (all thanks to the crafty, Lacey), the location – an enchanted secret forest a.k.a. San Simeon Point on the California coast, and oh yeah, one of our favorite leading ladies from the HBO series, Treme. What was there not to love? In front of 12 close friends and family + two furry children stepping in as flower girls, Neel + Lucia reworked the children’s book, I Like You by Sandol Stoddard Warburg, for their vows, celebrating a perfectly intimate wedding.

Lacey created an arbor that was lightweight enough to be carried the 30 minutes that it took to walk to the ceremony spot. To keep it light, she built it using modified bamboo tiki torches and Mitsumata branches. She wrapped the poles in metallic leather and adorned the whole thing with loads of feathers, hand dyed sola wood flowers, glass beads, silk ribbon and handmade paper feathers.

The two best flower girls anyone could ever ask for leading the way!

To incorporate Neel + Lucia’s musical background, Lacey created place cards out of handmade paper feathers from vintage sheet music, wrapped the stems with the same ribbon from the arbor and hand wrote each guests name on vintage vis-ed cards from the 50’s.

Those pretty little vintage cans? Coffee can + Flickr + Printer + Mod Podge + Flowers = a genius idea Lacey came up with that we’re going to “steal” after our coffee cans are good and empty! She found images of old vintage labels on Flickr, printed them out, Mod Podged those babies to coffee cans and filled them with South American roses, delphinium, stock, and lisianthus! Cheap, easy, and looks good? Love. Talk about being crafty on a budget – Lacey pulled off these gorg decorations and flowers for $600.

Doesn’t Lucia look incredible in her BHLDN dress in that top right polaroid? And, let’s not let Neel off the hook. He’s looking quite dapper and charming in his Theory suit.

A few sweet words from Lucia:

During the many years that we were friends we took a road trip up the coast together. We hiked all around the Central Coast, camped, grilled Hearst steaks in the woods, treated ourselves to a delicious meal at Madeline’s in Cambria, walked along the beaches, and came home together way more than friends – as we are today. So… we wanted to have our wedding in the area where our relationship began. We knew we wanted our ceremony outdoors, so we searched for spots and found San Simeon Point, a beautiful stretch of land that juts out into the Pacific. In order to get there, you have to walk across a beach and through an “enchanted” forest – about a 30-minute hike. Madeline’s was an easy choice for the reception dinner, as it was the restaurant where we had our “first date” and fortunately for us, since we had a small group, the venue was free. We only paid for the cost of the meal. I couldn’t have imagined the day to go any other way!

Congrats Neel + Lucia!

This week East Side Bride offers her very sane advice in a slightly un-sane situation. It’s kind of a long story, but worth the read because surely there are some of you out there in similar, seemingly impossibly positions. She’s so good with the sanity, isn’t she?

Dear ESB,

I’m a little overwhelmed and need your help. About two weeks ago my boyfriend and I got married. He is American and I am Canadian which has made our dating life for the past five years more difficult than most. For two of the five years he was in Canada but after being accepted to a phd program in the US, he moved back. Since I am a Canadian citizen I am unable to live and work there without a green card. So for three years I would visit him for 6 months of the year.

Needless to say this was becoming very difficult so while he was visiting me in Canada we decided to go to the courthouse and get married. This seemed to be the best idea as neither of us wanted either governments to tell us when, where and how to get married. Both of us want to have a larger ceremony within a year after my immigration is settled so we decided not to tell anybody that we are married and rather pretend that our ceremony in the future is our ‘real’ wedding.

That being said, the only person who knows we are married are our witnesses; my mum and a friend. My husband feels incredibly guilty for not having his parents there so he told them our plan to have a courthouse marriage for immigration purposes and have a larger ceremony in the future with friends and family. His parents now think that we are engaged and are suggesting they come to Niagara Falls one weekend and we get married at a courthouse there. Little do they know we are already married. The idea of planning a third fake wedding is ridiculous but I understand how my husband doesn’t want to hurt his mother’s feelings.

Anyway, it doesn’t stop there. Now on to the fake ceremony in a year… All of his family live in California and all of mine live in Ontario. My husband and I live in Texas. Both of us want our families to join us for the ceremony but we have no idea where to do it! If we have it in California, my family won’t be able to come because it is too far away and vice versa. Right now the best idea seems to be to have a wedding in Texas as it is half way between both places. I fear that many of my friends and family still won’t come as flying is quite expensive in Canada.

My mum has suggested that we get married there and then have two receptions; one in California and one in Ontario. Doing this would mean that our families probably won’t meet, not to mention the cost of all this will get very expensive. I have a small budget and so far we have a fake courthouse wedding to plan for his parents, a fake ceremony in Texas for whoever can make it, and two receptions in two countries. We are beginning to think an all inclusive wedding somewhere in the Caribbean would be the easiest however I am hesitant to add a third country to the mix. I am at a loss as to what we should do. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Overwhelmed immigrating bride

This is terrific pitch for a romantic comedy, but you know you can’t actually pull it off, right?

In the movie, his mom figures it out AT NIAGRA FALLS, while you’re all standing in front of the judge. So eff the fake courthouse thing. Suck it up and tell her the truth.

The guests at your wedding (let’s not call it a “fake ceremony,” mkay? it’s a wedding, your REAL WEDDING) won’t care that you’re already legally married. I’m not saying you have to engrave it on the invitations, but people do the courthouse thing all the time, for all kinds of reasons.

As for the WHERE: I can’t answer that question for you, lady. You have to go with your gut.

Is there no place, space, field, hut, house, chapel in any of the three locales that has special meaning to either of you? It shouldn’t be all about logistics.

Today’s striking inspiration shoot, photographed by Christian Oth and designed by Lyndsey Hamilton Events, combines everything we love about glamour: flawless makeup & hair, swoon-worthy florals, dresses to make you go mmm, fine details, and oh yes, a backdrop that will have any lady feel like all that’s missing in the world is a martini in your hand and your handsome fella to come sweep you off your heels. The inspiration behind this shoot was simple. They used the snazzy Chateau Marmont as inspiration to create a look that met mid-century modern with vintage Hollywood.

If there’s any reason for us to love Mondays, it’s because we get to share a bundle of new weddings with you! All you Northern Cali brides out there looking for a venue, this next one is quite the gem. Just a hop, skip, and jump past the Golden Gate Bridge to the Headlands Center for the Arts and you’re instantly transported to a naturally picturesque scene, perfect for a wedding. That’s what Jenn + Eric, two passionate architects, had in mind when they were planning their artistically beautiful wedding. We instantly fell in love with them. They’re that couple that will pull an all-nighter just to finish the details of their Ms. Pac-Man & Blinky costumes for Halloween, so it was without a doubt, when it came to their wedding they would put as much heart and thought into every detail.

As part of our wedding invitation suite, we included a little manila tag with a note “Send a wish for love & life.” Little did our guests know when they returned their message with the RSVP that their wishes and blessings would be transformed into the mobile that would hang above our heads on our wedding day. This was an excerpt from our wedding ceremony itself, spoken by Eric’s dad, who came out of pastoral retirement so he could marry us: “The mobile which you stand beneath, is composed of our individual wishes, and our collective hope, for your happiness in life and love. Friends, this mobile of wishes, like their relationship and many previous projects, is a joint creation – making something together.”

Their favors (Moleskine notebook, pencil, & tea towel) couldn’t have suited them better, considering an architect can never have enough notebooks to sketch in. To personalize them, they hand stamped and xylol transferred a special message onto each Moleskine and placed engraved golf pencils at the tables for everyone to grab. As an additional piece to the dinner table, Jenn + Eric fabric gocco printed tea towels in lieu of napkins for everyone to take home with them.

The combination of homegrown flowers from her mom’s garden & SF Flower Mart, plus the eye of close friend Liz (mastermind behind one of our favorite floral/design studios, The Nouveau Romantics), took Jenn’s initial “pick some wildflowers from the side of the road” vision to a whole other magical level.

From day one, we knew that we were going to resort to the iPad and our home music list. This was one cost that we were not willing to splurge on, and since day one of our relationship we were always creating a “Soundtrack of the Day” so how hard could it be right? We were very lucky to find an audio/visual rental place that explained everything and included a DIY setup guide. Needless to say we were making the playlist(s) almost to the day of. We needed a playlist for the pre-ceremony, one for the ceremony, another for the cocktail hour, dinner music, and dancing of course! It was a lot of work, but so incredibly worth it. A couple of our favorite photos are of me going over to the iPad and fast forwarding a song or two.

Instead of the traditional Mother/Son, Father/Daughter dances, they opted for a Friends and Family dance to “Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros.

Listen to it here:

A little fact about these two that you might find motivating – Part of their wedding journey included packing up their Brooklyn apartment of 5 years and making the move back home to California. “It was the cross country move, combined with wedding planning & quitting our jobs that really spurred us on to tackle a lot of the DIY projects and gathering of materials very early on.”

See, handling a zillion things while also trying to plan a wedding can be done! Congrats Jenn + Eric!
