We’re quite pleased to be stepping into the weekend with this darling shoot on the mind. Mary Claire Photography + the team found a little slice of the French countryside right at home in Arizona, and when you find such a place you clearly make the most of it!
Very much into this getup.
Posies Floral sure has a way of making us forget our love of colored bouquets.
We wanted this shoot to make you feel as if you were transported to the French countryside. From the early stages of planning we wanted to keep the design clean and simple with an organic, ethereal feel. We wanted the gorgeous tablescape to seamlessly integrate with its surroundings and the loose, organic shape of the florals and elements foraged from the location achieved this look. Ultimately we love the idea of an effortlessly sophisticated bride and groom, the type of people who are completely at ease with themselves and each other, the type of bride who runs around barefoot hand in hand with her love.
It’s nice to get into the details of a bridal look every now and then, don’t you think? Especially when such details accompany the prettiest wedding updos and dresses. These photos by Ashley Bee celebrate the deets, featuring bridal designer Sara Kim’s accessory line Handmade by Sara Kim:
Sara says, Our 2015 collection was inspired by watercolored florals and branches. I recently began watercoloring as a hobby and a form of meditation so the sketches and paintings that I practiced with really made my imagination turn. Also as a violinist during the day, everything about classical music inspires me in my designs. See the music influence below…
This collection was meant to capture the little handmade details that go into each piece, especially for the classic bride who wants an edgier look and timeless accents.
Hair + makeup artist Sharon Park dreamed up all the swoon-worthy updos…
Check out the hairpiece they designed exclusively for BHLDN, too.

This wedding, friends. First, Melanie’s Reem Acra gown looks like it was designed for her alone (and the custom gray is amaze). Then there’s Carondelet House for the venue, which is always a stunner when adorned with personal touches and an intimate guest list. Lastly there was this teeny little *interruption* during the reception when Maroon 5 crashed the wedding and surprised everyone while filming their video for “Sugar”, which M + R ended up making an appearance in. Ummm, best night ever?
Melanie says, Ryan and I wanted each of our guests to know how special they were to us, so for each of their table place cards we found old pictures of the guests and us together. We printed the pictures onto cards using Print.stagram and used an old school label maker to write their names. On the back of each table card, we wrote a multiple choice quiz question for each of our guests that referred to either an inside joke or a fond memory that we shared with them. The correct answer to the question corresponded to the table number they would be sitting at! The entire process was a bit time consuming, but Ryan and I had so much fun taking a trip down memory lane in order to create an individualized table card for each of our guests.
As the story goes, Maroon 5 apparently crashed several weddings that night for their music video, coordinating with venues. It just happened to be that M + R’s wedding was that night, and only Ryan knew anything was happening—not even their vendors. The sheet dropped and there they were…
Oh hello, Adam. (WHAAAT.)
After surprising everyone with a performance of “Sugar”, they sang “She Will Be Loved” for their first dance. Pretty sweet! Melanie tells us, It was an unforgettable experience and we can’t thank Maroon 5 and Black Dog Films enough for being so amazing and helping to make our day so special.
Maroon 5 was pretty epic, but our favorite moment of the wedding was the ceremony. We wrote the whole thing together and did our own vows. We also collected stones as tokens of support from our guests. Putting the time time into the ceremony and having everyone there in support was incredibly special and meaningful. Maroon 5 just pushed it over the top!
How’s this epic church for a ceremony? Crazy beautiful. Kristin + Matthew said ‘I Do’ there and then it was onto Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa for the reception out in a field in Michigan, a location they decided on after a little back and forth—she’s from Kansas, he’s from Michigan, and they live in NYC. See how they merged their Midwestern roots with an NYC love story in these stills by Erich McVey…
Kristin’s Veil! Yes, yes.
Matt’s family has a cabin at Crystal Mountain and he grew up skiing at the Northern Michigan resort. We chose this location because it was a place we loved and we wanted to share this beautiful part of the country with our guests. Our vision was to create a tented reception in a remote field. They found the field we used on an old property map. It was perfect. It felt so isolated and special. The night before we had our guests ride the ski lift up for mountaintop cocktails and live music. It was an ideal spot for a summer affair. (Check out their design inspiration on Pinterest.)
A little Michigan flair: local baby’s breath, Michigan cherries in fruit baskets, a cherry pie for dessert. The chalkboard signs that Kristin’s aunt wrote up now hang in their NYC apartment too.
Planning tips from the bride:
Get your dress fitted early.
The day is about you and your spouse, enjoy each moment, each person, and let the little details that do not matter (like things that go wrong) fade into the background. They will be good stories to tell later on.
Everything costs more than you would expect. Don’t be afraid to be creative and ask for help. Everyone wants to help in your special day. Thanks to all who helped out with ours!
Don’t assume that people are not coming if you did not get a response. Call them directly and make sure they received the invitation.
