Once the sun set in Maui, gorgeous chandeliers came out to line the intimate dinner and backyard lawn dance floor where Ming + Dan took their first dance to Dream a Little Dream by The Mamas & the Papas. This wasn’t your typical tropical hotel destination wedding thanks to the mesmerizing photography by Max Wanger, the styling & design from Bash, Please, and their venue, the Olowalu Plantation. It was on the ocean but without the sand, and the historical background of the location gave such character to their already beautiful wedding.

Jenny Packham’s Cascade gown and Kate Spade blue bow heels

Not that we’re biased because we live in LA, but the Smog Shoppe really is a fun wedding venue. It’s decorated with funky and retro tchotkes, a live succulent wall, it’s cozy and intimate, and it’s so easy to have both your ceremony & reception in the same spot. Every time we see a wedding from the shoppe we get excited to see how each couple makes the space their own. Sweet Emilia Jane did a fabulous job with designing the florals and Carol + Byron’s ‘fun party’ vibe while also incorporating details from their Chinese culture. It’s simply adorable!

For their wedding invitations, Carol + Byron started with a free printable download with a bold chevron pattern. With the help of friends they adjusted it to suit their tastes then used the design everywhere pretty paper could be involved – their programs, menus, escort cards, and table names.

I heard this many times before but it didn’t stick so I’ll say it again!  The whole day and night is a blur and you really want to be able to enjoy it and hang out with all of your guests. So, hire a wedding coordinator if you can and if you can’t then assign tasks to family and friends. They will be happy to help you and be part of the wedding. Make sure that you don’t have to deal with any tasks like paying your vendors or keeping track of the schedule. Plan what you can beforehand, hand out assignments, and have one person be the main contact person. Just enjoy the moment because the next day it will all feel like an amazing dream! Also there may be things that go wrong but don’t fixate on them!  The next day we worried about what went wrong and turns out we were the only ones who noticed or cared!

Great advice that’s always worth repearting. Congratulations Carol + Byron!

pale pink and purple watercolor invitations

Emily + Drew are in love with California. The coastline, the purples, oranges and pinks seen daily in the sunsets and sunrises, the laid back ethos. Everything they’ve come to grow up with and love was exactly what they wanted to share with all 150 of their guests. There was a heavy focus on the handcrafted, both in water colors (the invites, bridesmaid dresses, escort cards, table no’s) and on wine (red wine vinegar favors, wine bottle glass vessels). The look and feel of their wedding was refreshing, so colorful, and beautifully captured by Nancy Neil.

From engagement to wedding day, it was just short of 6 months. Everyone said we were crazy to do it so fast but we both knew there was no other way. Convincing my parents to trek 150 guests up a treacherous 10 mile hill to the middle of nowhere was the biggest hurdle but it was well worth it for the outcome!

New Jersey botanical garden wedding

Having a botanical garden as your wedding venue and adding your own touch of lavish florals is a beautiful thing. Yes, you’re already surrounded by lush greens already, but after seeing how Caitlin + Jarrod included simple and minimal terrariums throughout and had striking boutonnieres and bouquets, we see no harm in added more foliage to your wedding decor. The elegant florals they chose blended perfectly with their vintage style and venue, the 1920′s Skylands Manor at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens. So glad Charlotte Jenks Lewis is sharing this beauty with us!

Their music playlist took guests way back. The wedding party walked in to Si Tu Vois Ma Mère by Sidney Bechet, Caitlin walked down the aisle to La Vie En Rose by Édith Piaf and Louis Guglielmi, and their first dance song was One Never Knows, Does One? by Billie Holiday. All were performed live by Tamar Korn & Company.

The best part of the day was having the sun come out just as I started to walk down the aisle and then having my Uncle marry Jarrod and I over a stunning coy pond. The rest of the day was filled with incredible moments of dancing with our families and loved ones while the old world jazz band played, sneaking back to the ceremony pond alone under the stars, and being swept off my feet during the last dance and spun around the dance floor to end the night perfectly.

Carol Hannah beaded cap sleeve wedding dress

The story behind Jessica + Scott’s wedding is both beautiful and heartbreaking, but entirely full of love. You’d never believe their wedding was planned in just two months because of the amount of details, but it all goes to show the power of bringing family and talented friends together during a time of need and celebration. Jessica jumped out of bed early the morning of, pj’s and all to help her bridesmaids set up the lush tablescapes, a close friend stayed up the night before assembling every bridesmaid’s gorgeous floral necklace, and the beau’s lent their hand to set up the sail tent for the reception. It was a true tale of love captured in such a dreamy way by Michelle Heimerman.

What a beautiful silk crepe dress designed by one of our Project Runway faves, Carol Hannah. The hand cut lace details and open back (you’ll see in a sec) are so romantic.

Jessica’s bridal bouquet recipe is a good one: Silver Brunia, Dahlia, Snowberry, Rice Flower, Peppergrass, and Hellebores.

custom bridesmaid leis

Caroline, who was my florist and also my bridesmaid, went straight to work after our Welcome Dinner Friday night to make seven floral necklaces. They were made of rice flower, silver brunia, succulents, orchids, and beautiful hot majolika roses tied off with varying collected silk ribbon from the garment district. She fashioned wire bind wire into the support structure and wired on the flowers. To tie up these beautiful necklaces layers of silky ribbon in eclectic patterns and finishes were added. I really wanted something fun, fashion forward, and since it was a impromptu casual affair, the typical bridesmaid bouquet wasn’t going to fit the bill!

In late July, Scott and I found out that his mother, who had been battling Multiple Myeloma, a rare terminal form cancer, had decided to end treatment and was given only months to live. We had just gotten engaged, having been together 10 years now, and at the end of May set our sights on planning for a September 2013 wedding. After hearing the news, plus evaluating my own mother’s condition of moderate Alzheimer’s, we felt it was only right to put on the most spectacular wedding we could in just two months. So we buckled down and used all of our friends’ support, skills, and expertise to pull the wedding together. The wedding went perfectly and was everything we hoped. Scott’s mom passed away at the beginning of November and were so happy to have her be a part of our special day.

In the after hours, a 21′ movie theater screen was brought out to play their favorite movies. Sheepskin rugs were placed on the lawn, and Pendleton and Woolrich woolen blankets and dozens of pillows over Adirondack chairs made for a cozy outdoor living space to end the night.
