The perfect wedding venue for Lindsay + David was the Metropolitan Building, built in 1909 near the Queensborough Bridge. Its character is hard to miss with its brick textures, built-in bookcases and original freight elevator to take guests from street entrance to the fourth floor, where L + D’s black & white wedding celebration went down. She’s an architect who likes clean lines, rich textures and simple elegance. He’s a strategist who likes intentionality, original concepts and meaningful accents. Together they developed a wedding theme of modern vintage accents that were beautifully captured by Miho Aikawa Photography.

industrial Brooklyn wedding

A beer garden in Greenpoint, Brooklyn turned reception area, a crew of talented friends lending a hand, and as Brooke of Brookelyn Photography points out, quite possibly the most epic photobooth backdrop ever (it’s massive we tell ya). It all came together to make for one rad wedding. And when we say they had a crew of talented friends contributing, they really did. Jess will explain exactly how in a sec, but wow, this was definitely a labor of love.

From Jess: Let other people share responsibility and involve your friends as much as possible– our friend and designer, Chris Taylor, made a lot of the choices about flowers and decorations. It felt good to trust other people to make decisions. Our friend Lauren offered to make our wedding cake– not only was it beautiful and incredibly delicious, it was unforgettable, and meant so much more because we knew who baked it and how much work it was. Our friend Dan played mandolin during the ceremony and we would never have found our venue without our friend Ryan, who tended bar there. We enlisted our friend Nicole as our event coordinator– she kept us on schedule and sane. Our friend Tyler got ordained and performed the ceremony, and I can’t overstate how incredible it was to have someone we love stand up with us and make everything official. When we remember the wedding, we remember all of these people– and the whole wedding party hanging pennant flags– which is exactly the way we want to remember it.

Congratulations J + J!

San Ysidro Ranch wedding

Welcome back, Cakelets! We think starting September off with an elegant and small 15 guest family wedding by Braedon Flynn and a special giveaway (later today), sounds perfect, yes? With breathtaking gardens for an intimate ceremony and gorgeous portraits, and a stonehouse dining room, we totally get why Michelle + Andy fell in love with San Ysidro Ranch… and why they plan on going back every year for their anniversary. Side note: we love that idea of going back and staying at the place you got married at!

My favorite part of our wedding was that is was small. I could really enjoy the day and not be pulled in different directions. I was so relaxed and felt like I was on vacation! I loved being able to spend the morning of the wedding with my sister, nieces, Mom and Grandma getting ready. That was such a special time to share with them. San Ysidro Ranch was also one of the best decisions we made. It’s gorgeous and so us.

I love being crafty and having a small wedding let me do some things myself without getting overwhelemed. I made my niece Madeline’s pomander ball to carry down the aisle with rose petals sachets and tags.

San Ysidro Ranch is already so beautiful, I didn’t want to do too much and take away from the gorgeous surroundings. I wanted to keep the wedding elegant but nothing fussy. I tend to go for classic decor, so I had a lot of white florals, with rosemary and lavender to mimic the gardens at the ranch, chandeliers and lots of candles.

Marvimon wedding

With it’s vertical garden oasis, re-salvaged rustic tables, and exposed brick walls, The Marvimon House in Los Angeles added quite the awesome factor to Allison + Lowell’s wedding. But then what Brown Paper Design did with the florals (um, check out those hanging planters) just transformed the room. And, aside from their initials being L + A, these two really are in love with everything LA. Like really. LA based vendors under one roof, Moscow Mules graced the tables, pretty music was played, and pink snake skin stilettos were worn. T’was a successful & gorgeous wedding, you’ll see!

These pink snake skin stilettos paired with an all lace and French bustled gown may not have sounded like they’d mix well, but oh did they. Wow. And the dress? There’s a pretty great story behind it that you’ll hear all about from Allison in just a sec.

Monique Lhuillier lace v-neck dress

My dress was a custom made unfinished Monique Lhuillier lace dress which I bought at a sample sale. It doesn’t have a name attached to it because it was never a part of any collection. I feel in love with the lace detailing and had never seen it before, and have yet to see it again. The dress had to be altered down 3-4 sizes, fitted, and finished by Anne Fiser of “A stich in Time”.  The jeweled belt & veil I wore was handmade by Anne’s daughter, Olivia.  They not only made my dress spectacular but helped me with every part of my wedding including, and most importantly, recommending Yoleine (my amazing coordinator and planner).

Brown Paper Designs blew my mind!  The flowers used for the bridal party were icelandic poppies, ranunculus, stock, peonies, and yellow roses (to honor my grandmother that passed away & they’re also the flower for the city I was born in: Tyler, TX). Throughout the space they used a mix of ranunculus, stock, peonies, moss, walking sticks… it all looks stunning.
