colorful birthday invite

Turning the big dirtay 30 is the best time to throw yourself a radtastic party. Edyta Szyszlo, also one of our fave photographers, well she’s been known to cut a rug at house parties and just about everywhere she goes, so it was a must to have a dance party for her birthday. And well, homegirl knows how to throw a party! Just take a look at that invitation, designed by Hello!Lucky. Hang-on-the-wall-like-a-piece-of-art-worthy! With an invite like that, for a girl who loves mixing opposites together (chic & glam, rustic & quirky), and would put a white sheepskin rug out in the middle of the desert, aren’t you curious to see how she rang in the start of her third decade?

So where did it all go down? The Workshop SF. It was the perfect mix of quirky, DIY details, creative, unique and comfy size (not to mention just a few blocks away from where I live) so it was the perfect spot to host the event. And they teach some amazing DIY classes for anyone to take!

cake pops

No cake or cupcakes here! I wanted a variety of cakepop flavors to make it easy to appease everyone’s tastes and provide easy munching on the dance floor!

star-themed baby shower invites

Y’all have heard of Grey Likes Baby, yes? It’s run by the adorable Summer Watkins, also of Grey Likes Weddings, for stylish moms & dads who aspire to live beautifully. As you can imagine, there’s a lot of cuteness on her blog. Like this baby shower she posted a few weeks back. We were so inspired by the glam concept and how easily it can be used for a bridal shower, or birthday party that we had to share!

There are but a handful of birthdays that should most definitely be accompanied by epic parties. One of them being your 30th! Lucky for us, Sarah Sherman Samuel of Smitten Studio did exactly that – threw an epic party of Palm Springs and Alice in Wonderland proportions at one of our fav estates, Casa Verona. While the invitation set the stage for a monochromatic color scheme for guests to arrive in black & white, the birthday girl stood out, donning an adorable gold sequins little number.

For my 30th birthday I knew I wanted to have a destination party to share with my closest friends, so we picked Palm Springs, rented this amazing house and went from there. I’ve always loved the whimsical sense of “Alice in Wonderland” but wanted to do a modern twist on it to fit my own personal aesthetic. My version is more “Alice in Palms Springs”… what happens when Alice meets the Rat Pack.

gold and black confetti

This theme was shown through over-sized bow headpieces, Alice and the White Rabbit Place cards, “drink me” labels on the glasses, top hats, cat mask, rabbit ears, gold painted flamingos, giant paper flowers, and the mix of fanciful patterns. Black bow ties served as napkin ties and double as party favors. As the party went on some of the guests wore them on their heads, around their neck and on their wrists as boutonnieres.

I designed and had printed all of the textiles which I then made the napkins, table cloths, and table runners from. I also made circle confetti to dot the table tops and gold geometric bunting to frame out the bar area. The centerpieces where made of candles and drinking glasses that I bought at the 99 cent store. I sprayed them all white, and then I painted the glass candles to look as though they were dipped in gold, and for the glasses that served as candle holders, I used a gold foil pen to pretty them up with a dot pattern.

4 May

In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo and all things that are colorful, tasty, and festive, we’re going to share some decor ideas from Jillian’s son’s first birthday fiesta! We know this was a first birthday and all, but what better way to go into the weekend than with a vision of your near future of a belly full of tacos and cerveza! The details are easy enough that you can whip them up shortly after reading this post, should the creative bug strike you…

fiesta birthday party

Party necessity numero uno: bright streamers! They’re inexpensive, you can buy handfuls of rolls and hang them in alternating colors. For an even bigger impact, go wider, or try covering an entire wall’s length!

Papel picado is a must! It moves with the breeze and having decorations above you always helps to create a festive atmosphere. No one will blame you if you “accidentally” leave them up a few days longer either.

The eats: black bean taquitos sprinkled with cilantro, guacamole, tortilla chips, seven layer dip, and sliced mango with cayenne paper. Mouthwatering bites, and they’re so quick to make, slice, heat up, or mash!

Oh… the sweets were delish. The cupcakes were vanilla with cream cheese frosting and topped with spiced mango. And for added sugar, a colorful sprinkled cake from Hotcakes Bakes.

Amanda added a cute punch of color to the cake stand by cutting orange tissue paper to make a fun fringe detail.

First birthday down, plenty more to go!
