Bohemian fall barn wedding: Danielle + Zeke

October 24, 2016
Barn wedding

Danielle + Zeke’s wedding had tons of different of thoughtful elements and influences, but that didn’t stop them from incorporating every single detail that represented them into the day. From including elements from cultures around the world to portray their wanderlust to imagery from stories that influenced them as children, we can only imagine what their 120 guests thought when they walked into Handsome Hollow in Catskills, NY. Thanks to LOVE + WOLVES CO for sharing!

Both of our childhoods fostered an appreciation for fantasy tales like The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Alice in Wonderland, so we wanted elements from those stories to shine through elements of the day… We wanted to convey that same childhood curiosity for our guests, similar to the mystery of a secret door, with endless possibilities of what could be found on the other side. Bernadette of The River Garden created a fern and feather garland curtain, which served as the entrance to the reception, and it was magical to watch as guests playfully stepped through the garland, as if out of a fantasy novel, down a rabbit hole, and into another magical world.

Wooden tambourines from Mexico City served as escort cards, table numbers, noise makers and dance-floor accessories, and wedding favors—there wasn’t a single guest that left without one in hand. A fortune teller, who held court in front of a mantle flanked by skull heads and healing crystals, dealt vintage tarot cards to anxiously-awaiting guests. It was a global treasure trove surrounded by love, imagination, and beautiful hearts and souls. It was a true reflection of us.

I handmade all of the stationery, including homemade watercolor paper and envelopes for our Save-the-Dates. Zeke helped with the process of soaking and baking the paper—the fact that we didn’t kill each other or burn the house down during this process was a feat in itself! Our laser-cut invitations were made with my Cricut machine and we kept a consistent feather theme by including one in every envelope, at every place setting, and scattered them everywhere at our venue.

Danielle’s planning tips…

Tip #1: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’re building your wedding from the ground up, like we did, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The 9-month planning process would have been terrifying without the expertise of our amazing planner and stylist. Angela of Elite Wedding Planning and Tammy of Hudson Valley Vintage Rentals took all of the pieces (and there were a lot!) and put them together in a way that even my wildly imaginative and creative mind couldn’t have conceived. And, if you’re going to put your heart and soul into elements of the day, find a rock star photographer. Jake of LOVE + WOLVES CO understood our vision and goals, and tied it all together with his genius captures of the day. Mind blown!

Tip #2: Take time-outs. Time-outs are always a good idea in normal life, but especially during wedding planning life! Remember what the end goal is and learn to ride with the bumps along the way. Don’t forget to take a time-out on your wedding day too. Just the two of you. Take a minute to look around at everyone and everything. Halfway through our reception, Zeke and I went up to the mezzanine of the barn. As we looked down at all of our favorite people gathered in one place at one time, the feeling we had is just indescribable.
