How cute is this tropical floral swing for Wendy + Clay’s destination wedding on Maui? These two have actually known each other since the 7th grade and have the sweetest love story, which you’ll find in the post. They took 15 months to plan their wedding, which gave them plenty of time to work out the beautiful details with Platinum Weddings & Events at the Olowalu Plantation House. If you’re looking for inspiration for an ultra romantic Hawaii wedding, these photos by Dmitri and Sandra Photography are totally it!

Wendy tells it, The wedding was lush, vibrant, a little moody, modern, and tropical in shades of dark teal, greenery, and bright, bubblegum pink. One of the main reasons we love Maui is that it is a tropical paradise so our main goal was to incorporate that lush island feel. We decided on dark teal as our color because it reminded us of the ocean. And the bright pink florals were the perfect contrast to all of the teals, greens, and blues.

They welcomed 60 guests to their destination wedding, and choose Olowalu Plantation House on Maui because it was private, on a beach, surrounded by palm trees, and had a giant pier looking out to the volcano in the distance. They also had personal memories in Olowalu which sealed the deal!

We started selecting vendors about 12 months out. Amber of Platinum Weddings & Events had an order for us to follow when selecting vendors (ie photography first, catering second, etc) so that went very smoothly. And around that time they created a mood board based off of the ideas I had in my head and on my Pinterest board and that was when it all got really fun! We got a lot busier as far as planning and making decisions went too. If you are planning a destination wedding definitely get a planner. I am so glad we had Amber because planning really was so simple. We knew exactly what needed to be decided by when, she recommended really awesome vendors, and they took all the mish mash inside of our heads and turned it into something that was so gorgeous!

Both Wendy + Clay’s fave moment was the first look. They also loved having a moment together while all of their guests were celebrating, looking out into the sunset as a married couple. So sweet!

They choose their photographers, Dmitri and Sandra, after looking through many weddings at their specific venue to see who captured it in their style. They loved that they also captured beautiful shots of the area as well as the wedding itself!

Their story…
Wendy and Clay met in the 7th grade, when she was 12 and he was 13. Wendy had a crush on Clayton right away, she thought that he was the cutest boy in the whole class. He had bleached hair, a summer tan and a great smile. She had bangs that started half way up her head, a full set of braces and was painfully shy. She thought he was way out of her league! They went to high school together but didn’t start dating until Clay transferred to Wendy’s college (CSU) for sophomore year.

They saw each other at a party and soon after that went on their first date. Neither were planning on anything serious but before they knew it there were inseparable. Later that first year Clayton said he wanted to get married and like a logical 19 year old, Wendy said, “No, we are too young.” Wendy waited a decade before he asked again but says that she wouldn’t have it any other way. It allowed them to learn about each other and themselves and the strength of their love. They have grown together as individuals, as a couple, as best friends and each other’s better half.

On the day of the proposal, Clay told Wendy that he was hungry and wanted to get pizza. He passed about 10 pizza places, much to Wendy’s confusion, and finally pulled up to the parking lot of the school where they first met 19 years ago, that was when she knew! They went to their old classroom and he got down on one knee and popped the question. They got married on the 12th anniversary of their first kiss.
