Happy almost weekend, Cakies! Hope you liked the last studio tour we had up. Brookelyn Photography of The Wedding Artists Collective also photographed Patina’s beautiful space, which if you ask us, is a portrait of rustic-vintage perfection. Creative Director Corrin not only gave us a peek, but a little insight into the industry (that those of you thinking of starting up a wedding biz will love). Enjoy!

Thanks to Brooke for sharing the photos.

What keeps you inspired with Patina?

There is inspiration everywhere you turn especially in a city like New York, but what keeps me most inspired are our clients. They are amongst the best, most talented creatives in NYC and they come up with amazing ways to tell their stories experientially through event design. I love to see what they do with our pieces and how they combine them to tell their unique story. I love being able to provide the tools for them to do such amazing work.

What’s the best thing you’ve done for your business?

After I left the corporate world to start my own business I had an event company. We had a lot of success and did fantastic work, but I was the one doing the work for my clients and had little time to work on growth planning, marketing, and strategy for my own business. I knew I needed to change things up, and aside from being completely burnt out, I knew that this wasn’t sustainable or scalable from a business standpoint. Patina is a much more sane and scalable approach. I am doing something I love—growing a business, and selling something I’m madly in love with—vintage furniture and décor. And I still get to leverage my event planning experience without having to provide that intensive level of client work that event planning requires. Being able to rely on others to provide the service has enabled us to grow tremendously over the last three years.

How do you define success?

My definition of success combines happiness + balance. I need to be doing something I love (check) with people I love (check) in a sane way that let’s me share important family moments with my son and husband (check) and make enough money to take nice vacations (check). Yes!

What advice would you give to anyone starting a business like yours?

It’s hard work, and it keeps getting harder. If you are not afraid to give it everything you’ve got—go for it. Save up lots of money and lots of favors because you are going to need them both. But once you do, everything is so much more fulfilling and the hard work doesn’t feel as hard anymore. You will think “Why the eff am I doing this again? Am I insane?”, realize the answer is yes, then accept it and move on.

Favorite trend of the moment?

I don’t like to follow trends, and I don’t like to encourage others to do it either. I think people need to go with what’s on the inside, and show what makes them uniquely them. Be brave, be yourself, that’s what’s beautiful to me.

Is there an artist/designer/generally creative person in a totally different field who inspires you?

I’m really into the artist JR who is a photographer/graffiti artist whose work is so totally inspirational. He takes the context of the place and infuses good vibes through his soulful images.

What has been your favorite wedding moment?

We follow our clients on Instagram and stalk their weddings every weekend. We love to see their big day come together after all of the planning. There was one image that we came across from a bride. she was sitting on our Perry Sofa with her grandmother in a vineyard. The bride had a big ol’ smile, and her grandmother wore a smirk and had a wild look in her eyes as she was slapping her knee. This reminded me of all of the good times I had with my grandmother—she was a wild one—and it really hit close to home because that’s why we do this, for those moments to make memories and bring people together in a setting that lasts only so briefly.

If you weren’t at Patina, what would you be?

A drummer in an all girl punk rock band.

Patina is expanding their inventory, working on new projects and collections, and launching a new retail collection soon, so be sure to keep ‘em on your radar.
