Honestly, what would we do without the Ban.do gals? They always bring it when it comes to pretty and colorful accessories! And not to sound overly dramatic, but we can finally see the light (called Summer) at the end of this rainy Spring tunnel. Weddings, bachelorette parties, backyard bbq’s, pool parties, etc etc, if you’re sportin’ one of these pieces from their new collection, we’re positive your fun level will get a major boost.

Birdcages hung from trees, lavender, pink and vanilla roses, walking up to your reception on a black carpet, floating candles in a pool, Vera Wang, chandeliers above the dance floor, and timeless photos captured by Charlotte Jenks Lewis. Sounds glamorous and romantic. It reminds us how pretty black & white weddings can be when they’re taken out of the ballroom and placed in an intimate setting. Like Tara + Martin’s amazing backyard, where guests could feel like they were wining and dining in a magical tree house.

The best advice I got came from a friend. They told me I didn’t need to hire a wedding planner, just a great florist who shared my vision and knew what they were doing. That’s how I came across Michael George. He was a pure joy to work with and created amazing arrangements!

Oop, look who’s stopping by today! It’s our favorite wedding etiquette expert, Ms. East Side Bride. We’re betting that every lady shopping for her white dress has asked herself this same question.

Dear ESB,

I live in Brooklyn, NY. I am 30 years old and getting married in Sept of this year. I work in a fashion-related field and I like to think I have good sense of personal style. However, the past few months I have been in wedding-dress-shopping-hell. I just have NOT enjoyed the process. Mainly because most dresses at bridal shops I find to be really cheesy (strapless, puffy skirts, etc) and they made me feel like I was wearing a costume. Nothing felt right.

Then, recently I found a dress at Saks in their evening wear dept. that I liked. It is not a wedding dress, but it can easily pass for one. It was the first dress I tried on that felt…good. It wasn’t an amazing “I’m so freaking psyched this is IT” kind of moment, but it was good. Plus, it was affordable. (Under 1K) After trying on so many dresses that were horrible and expensive, I was really happy to feel “good” in something at last. I bought the dress off the rack.

I know this is not a huge problem, and I am not complaining I swear. I am marrying my best friend whom I love immensely, and I would be ecstatic about doing so in a potato sack for what it’s worth. But I am curious what other girls out there have experienced?

Is there supposed to be some moment where you fall in love with your dress, or have other people just felt “alright” like I do? What was your experience when you picked out your dress, ESB?

*****

I’ve gotten this question several times over the past couple of years. You’re not the only bride feeling ambivalent about her dress, or wondering, “How do I know if it’s THE ONE?”

I tried on — and bought — a grand total of two dresses.

The first one was a sample I plucked off the rack when I was shopping for a bridesmaids dress for my best friend’s wedding. I was secretly engaged, this friend was the only one who knew, and when I put the damn thing on I think I was just so excited to see myself as a BRIDE that I bought it even though it wasn’t me at all.

For a whole year I told myself I was going to wear that stupid dress. I bought two pairs of shoes and a pair of earrings (and maybe even a shrug?) to go with it, desperately trying to make it work. And then three months before the wedding I panicked and went into a teensy little hole-in-the-wall boutique in my neighborhood and tried on this other, crazy amazing dress.

Did I FALL IN LOVE with it? I don’t know. But I know I felt good in it. I felt like me.

If you feel good in your dress, you’re doing A-Okay.

And: I hereby give you permission to buy a second dress if you change your mind.

Seeking a little Jenny Packham, pink and apricot wedding inspiration from London to go with your morning cup of tea? Always. Here’s why we love this one so much: Anika + Matt’s wedding was the perfect combination of classic and modern. The soft peony floral arrangements speak to Anika’s romantic side. Snuggled next to those were table numbers in various fonts that represent her love of typography. While their venue, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, speaks to her adoration of the modern. It all works. And who better to capture it all than Jodie Chapman!

Jenny Packham 20s Wedding Dress

I was all set on having a knee-length dress…but then paid a visit to Jenny Packham and fell in love with a beaded, slightly 1920s style dress. It felt comfortable and had the casual elegance which I had been looking for, plus the seamstress at Jenny Packham was amazing and adjusted the dress to how I wanted to wear it, slightly nipped at the waist.

She told Patrick Ludde that she didn’t want her hair to look too done up so he created a full, relaxed, low bun.

ICA London Wedding Venue

London destination weddings take note. The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London is very central in its location and sits in a Regency-style building on The Mall, between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. If guests want take a stroll through the venue while you’re off taking photos, they can catch a glimpse of Big Ben and the London Eye from ICA’s balconies.

Floral Arrangements of Pinks, Peaches, and Violets

Anika wanted arrangements that were elegant, full and not at all stiff. Scarlet & Violet started with the sunset coral peony and a loose colour palette of pinks and apricots. From there, full arrangements of roses, peonies and sweet peas in pink, apricot and parchment tones, along with shades of cream and grey-lilac filled every corner.

And the music went a little something like this: For the ceremony, we had Elvis “Can’t Help Falling in Love” , The Beach Boys version of “And Then I Kissed Her” and Stevie Wonder’s “Signed Sealed Delivered”. The first dance song took the longest time, as we knew we wanted something romantic and also with a fast tempo. We chose Jackie Wilson’s “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher”, which was perfect for us. During the ceremony we had a sing-along with a couple of musicians on ukuleles, to The Beatles, “I wanna hold your hand” – everyone joined in!

Anika scoured charity shops and flea markets to find a mix of antique photo frames in which to display the table numbers. Working in publishing, Anika has an interest in typography so each table had a different style to achieve an individual but cohesive look.
