Welcome back from your first summer weekend Cakelets! We’ve got a great DIY wedding shot by the talented W.Scott Chester Photography to start the week off that will have you phoning in all your creative friends and family members to help with your big day. Two artists coming together when planning their wedding really does make for one heck of a power couple. The proof is in these two lovebirds. Erin’s the painter, Jason the graphic artist, so together they included personal DIY projects that made their wedding truly awesome!

If I had to title the theme to our wedding, I might call it an “Enchanted Journey of Love”. We had a sort of “Midsummer Nights Dream” thing going on with all the flowers, feathers, little animals, a photobooth built like a ship, paper airplanes, globes and suitcases. The color palette was definitely important to me and overall felt like it was a complementary color scheme – teal/turquoise and orange/blush with black and white with a vintage vibe. The colors were actually inspired by Kanye West’s Runaway video. (We love that she pulled inspiration from a music video!)

Handmade compass cufflinks worn by Jason + bridesmaids compass necklaces were an fun score from Etsy.

Their friend, Ben Weatherford, who plays in a jazz trio (with no official name – yet!) played “Tenderly” by Barney Kessel as Erin walked down the aisle with her father.

Their exiting song, after they exchanged those heartfelt ‘I Do’s'? “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles. Great song and definitely helps to put us right in the moment with them.

Remember that adorable little airplane in the very first image? Those were their favors! Erin had a few custom stamps made, bought balsa wood model airplanes off Amazon, stamped them, wrapped them in kraft paper with a little bakers twine & stamped tag. Proving to be less expensive than having the planes custom printed on, guests ended up walking away with a playful and handmade gift.

If going with a florist isn’t within your budget but you’ve got at least one creative bone in your body- take some tips from Mrs. Erin. With no formal training she took on the role of her own florist by asking a few pros for some tips, looked at pictures online, then “went to town!“.

The big huge wedding cake, to me, seemed like a silly way to spend money. Instead, I asked all the mothers and grandmother to all make their favorite cake or two with white icing. My sister and I made some cupcakes and in the end we had a pretty amazing cake table with the different cakes on mix-matched cake plates borrowed or found at Goodwill.

Another super fun saver for ya, the photobooth. Knowing that there most definitely had to be a photobooth at their wedding, Erin scoured eBay, Goodwill, and the closets of her friends for props. Her father, who has the skills of Bob Villa built them a stage to look like a ship, Erin Bailess of Bright Young Things decorated it, a few lights here and there and viola!
We know choosing a song that will play during your first dance, or the song that you and your father will dance to are just as important as every other detail in your wedding so we asked Erin to share what hers were. Their first dance as a Mr. & Mrs. was to “Islands in the Stream” by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, while the always sweet father/daughter dance song was “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac – chosen by her father after telling her that he used to rock her to sleep listening to it (guaranteed tears!). Congrats you two!

We thought we’d end the week with a sweet tutorial on making your own floral garland. Remember that cute brunch we posted from Local Social? They’re back to share the garland they made for their buffet table. Yay. We’re going to let them lead with the instructions. Here goes:

Step 1:
Get your tools ready: You’ll need a pair of pruning sheers, some garden wire cut in about four inch strips, wire cutter, and of course flowers.
Step 2:
Pick out your favorite flowers and get your tools ready. Mixing up some greens with a couple accent colors worked for us. Make sure to ask your florist for hardy flowers that won’t wilt too quickly. Once you put this together, there is no real easy way to keep it fresh. Ours lasted for 2 days without water and a little spritzing.
Step 3:
Start putting together a mini bouquet/arrangement of your flowers. Once you are satisfied, loop a wire around to secure the bundle. Make more.

Step 4:
Once you have enough bundles, you can begin putting them together. Overlap the first bundle over the second so the stems are not visible. Take wire and bind together being careful to weave in between the top bundle in order to make the wire as conspicuous as possible.
Step 5:
Continue until you have made your garland as long as you want. Make sure any weak points are secure with more wire. Now is the time to patch up any holes with extra flowers and stems.

Pretty pretty. Thanks for sharing ladies!
Everyone, have a sweet summer weekend!
