As a two designer couple, the invitations and paper goods are definitely in our top three list of most important details for the wedding. But sitting down to design them is no easy task. As any other designers out there know, designing for yourself can be quite the challenge. We had a great time designing our Save the Dates, but the Invitations just seem like a much more daunting task. So to get us started, we gathered together some examples of trends and styles we’re currently really drawn to.

These styles definitely run the gamut, but I think as broad concepts they may all come into play for us. I tend to gravitate towards invitations that tell a story, whether it’s through its words, or imagery or both. So I think that will be an important consideration as we begin the design process. But I don’t think the story would be complete without bold color, interesting, typography, unexpected details, and illustration all playing a role. Time to get to work!

Is anyone else in the same boat? What styles are currently inspiring you?

  1. my fiance and i are making our invites now- and he writes all of his love letters to me on his typewriter- so naturally we are using his typewriter to type all of the invites with a little short story that he wrote (he’s a writer) of how our love began. the little story/invite is held inside of pockets that my nana made out of vintage fabric that will be the theme of our wedding. i photos of the pockets on my blog listed above!

  2. Thanks for this post. My fiance and I are both designers too and are just starting to tackle the design for the wedding. We are planning on making some design decisions soon, it’s so tough!

  3. Love, love, love these!

  4. I am so getting into this as I am planning and planning. I so love photography and now am becoming a fan of papergoods, however if we are designing our own stuff and would like to experiement with make different invitations or save the dates, what (not hugely expensive) for us novices….software do you recommend to begin to illustrate or begin designing stationary products. I am also planning my sons 1st bday and would love an alternative to the chessy canned stuff out there. I would like to think I could do better and not break the bank. Help????

  5. love this stuff! trend is . . .march to the beat of your own drummer! love the top one for its very interesting subdued neon palette and circus theme. love the last for its super bold text and super bright in your color.

  6. What a wonderful collection of modern design trends. Can’t wait to see what you decide! I’m always a proponent of negative space. Lately papercuts have been catching my eye, as well as art deco.

  7. All these are so great! I love the little stripe paper that pulls up on one of the invites!

  8. I’m a fellow designer, and I love your inspiration. I, too, am struggling to design my own invitations! I design for others all the time, but for some reason it is so much harder to design for yourself! I think you have some great ideas to get you going. So far, I am using the “story and typography” elements to design my Save the Date, and I think the actual invitation may be a bit more traditional. Good luck! I’m sure you will create something unique and beautiful!

  9. These are all just incredible! So inspiring; makes be want to dust off the sketchbook. :)

  10. @shaylah wow, that is amazing! i hope we get to see the final product!

@ julie and kaherine. isn’t it though? i’m always so excited to get started and then end up having the hardest time making decisions!

  11. Love Codi & Simon’s invite! The illustrations and use of color are beautiful.

  12. i love it! every single thing! thanks!

  13. The bold, saturated invitations were done by Katie Kirk illustration. LOVE!
